About Caring for Older Parents

Caring for Older Parents is an independent reference site for family members — mostly adult children — who are helping an older parent manage daily life. It exists because the U.S. eldercare system is genuinely confusing from the outside: services are run by a patchwork of federal agencies, state offices, Area Agencies on Aging, and nonprofits, and the vocabulary (respite, SHIP, custodial care, CCRC) is rarely explained anywhere in one place.

Our pages cover logistics and terminology: how to locate local services, what the common care settings are, which support programs exist for family caregivers, and how to organize a parent's paperwork. The site also offers a free Care Planning Readiness Check to help families see where their arrangement has gaps.

Everything published here is reviewed reference material drawn from durable, publicly available sources — chiefly the Administration for Community Living, MedlinePlus, CMS, the VA, and established caregiving nonprofits — with links to those sources on every guide page.
